CHILDCARE FROM STUDENT FINANCE

Q. Who is eligible for a Childcare Grant?
A. The Childcare grant is available to full-time Students in both Further and Higher education with dependant children. The Childcare provider must be registered.

Q. How much would Studentfinanceni contribute to childcare costs?
A. If you are in Further Education, you could receive 100% of actual childcare cost up to £150 for one child and £255 for two or more children.
Higher Education students could receive up to 85% of actual childcare costs; up to £148.75 for one child and £255 for two or more children

Q. How can I apply for a childcare grant?
A. Fill in the relevant section on either the PN1 form (Higher Education Students) or the FE Award application (Further Education students).  Studentfinanceni will then forward you the relevant application form for the childcare grant.

PARENTS LEARNING ALLOWANCE

Q. What is the Parents Learning Allowance?
A. An allowance to help with course related costs for full time students with dependent children. (Higher Education students only) You could receive up to £1,538 per year. This is dependent on household income.

CARE TO LEARN SCHEME

Q. What is the Care to Learn (NI) Scheme
A. It is a scheme to provide childcare support for 16, 17, 18 and 19 year old parents in Further Education

Q Who is eligible?
A. To be eligible a student must be:

  • a parent
  • at least 16 years old and
  • aged under 20 years of age old at start of their course of study
  • living in NI
  • Students with over 80% attendance

Q. What courses are eligible?
A. Full time and part time FE and HE vocational courses, NVQ at levels 1, 2 & 3, GCSE’s, A & AS Levels.

Q. Do the children have to be with a registered childminder/crèche?
A. Yes, for example:  

  • Persons or groups registered to look after children & registered with the Health & Social Services Board
  • Day Nurseries, children’s centres and family centres
  • Crèches
  • Out of School Day Care before or after school and during school holidays.
  • Pre-school Playgroups

Q. Who decides choice of childminder?
A. This is the sole responsibility of the student/parent. It is not the responsibility of NWRC

Q. What assistance is available?
A. Assistance will be provided on the basis of actual costs of childcare, including any deposit and reasonable travel costs. Maximum assistance available for registered childcare is up to £165 per week for each child but based on actual costs.
