About us

North West Regional College was established on 1st August 2007, bringing together Limavady College and North West Institute to create a larger, stronger area-based college to provide the highest quality of education and training to all the people of the North West.

The College's main campuses are located in Limavady, Derry/Londonderry and Strabane, and it also has a number of other smaller centres situated throughout the North West. It supports around 24,000 students every year in achieving their personal educational goals, by offering courses available either on a full-time or part-time basis.

... Going from strength to strength

These students are usually secondary school leavers, mature students, professionals and the unemployed, and originate from all parts of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland - the majority from local areas including neighbouring County Donegal. In recent times, the College has witnessed an increase in student numbers, largely due to the offering of exciting higher programmes such as BSc Hons Degree in Social Work, and Foundation Degrees in Software Development, Construction, Hospitality, Multimedia, and Travel & Tourism. It now offers a range of Higher National Diplomas and Certificates (HND/ HNC) in areas such as Art & Design, Business, Construction, Caring, Drama, Engineering, Leisure, Media, Music, Travel & Tourism and others.

... Working with industry

Many of courses at the College are developed in conjunction with local employers and are designed to give the students a feel for future employment and to enhance their practical competence in their chosen vocation. A prime example is the trades and apprenticeships opportunities now on offer through the Training for Success portfolio. The Job-Ready and Apprenticeship Training options allow young people to choose a trade and earn as they learn in practical way.

Other routes into employment include BTEC programmes such as First and National Diplomas, which blend a more modern classroom delivery with real-life work-based challenges. For those wishing to progress to university, these programmes provide direct access into Honours options both locally and throughout the UK.

Its part-time portfolio continues to grow and includes hundreds of courses in areas such as Essential Skills (Numeracy & Literacy), hobby & recreation, return to study, and professional development, as well as the traditional part-time vocational courses.

... Preparing for the future

The majority of the students enrolled in the College participate in provision which leads to recognised vocational qualifications. In addition, the College provides employer based provision in the area of Essential Skills. It also works closely with community-based partners to acquire new skills and qualifications, thus increasing their employability and the prosperity of the local economy.

Around 700 of North West Regional College graduates undertake degree programmes each year, while hundreds of others from the College move directly into employment, with many assuming roles with organisations based in the local region. The quality of education and training on offer at North West Regional College is continually reflected in the honours and awards it receives. Recently, it was acknowledged as a Centre of Excellence in the following areas; Software Development, Construction & the Built Environment, and Journalism.

... In the region

The College makes a significant contribution to the local economy both as an employer and a provider of education and training. With approximately 500 full-time, and 300 part-time employees, the College is one of the largest employers in the North West. It is a lead partner in the local Workforce Development Forum, partnering representatives of industry and commerce and the local council, to provide and develop a comprehensive range of retraining programmes to suit the needs of local employers.

... Providing support

The College also adopts a professional, friendly and sensitive approach to student support. Experienced and qualified personnel provide help and assistance on accommodation, finance, careers, university application, pastoral care/counselling and health matters.

A full range of access facilities for students with disabilities is also on offer.

Its dynamic and representative Students' Union makes everyday life highly enjoyable and rewarding. The Union has a host of clubs and societies, and organises a range of events and outings each year. Sport and recreation is also high on the agenda. Indeed, recent years have seen the College win Inter-College Honours in Soccer, GAA and Rugby competitions.

North West Regional College is destined to go from strength to strength and is well placed to make an invaluable contribution to the growth and development of the North West.
