First launched in the summer 2005, the NWRC wireless project aims to further education, improve learning, and encourage the use of the latest wireless technologies. This site will provide a useful resource to new users, existing users and staff alike.

Currently deployed within the institute is the Toashiba Portege M200 Tablet PC (pictured left). It is a small, light and fully featured notebook, with a rotating screen, bluetooth, wireless and a Pentium M processor. The screen has been engineered to be touch sensitive, allowing control of the device using the pen provided. It runs Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, which is a modified version of Windows XP Pro. In order to maintain the software functionality of these tablets, they are recalled on a relatively regular basis for re-imaging, incorporating the latest security and software updates.

Our wireless network current spans the core classrooms used by the Interactive Media HND, who are the current batch of test users for this project. They are using our tablet PC's in a standard classroom which has been equipped with a wireless access point, as well as an interactive smartboard with bluetooth connectivity. Other devices in use featuring wireless connectivity include the projectors in each classroom, capable of connecting to a WEP enabled network, as well as some staff PDA's with integrated wireless and bluetooth.

There are currently access points deployed in the Tower Building, Strand Building, Northland Building and City Factory. Further expansion in wireless infrastructure will be based on the planning and installation work currently in progress. With our system created by Trapeze Networks, and assistance provided by Telindus, we are in partnership with the University of Ulster and Derry City Council in developing and deploying this network.
