Result: All Ireland Colleges League Division 2 League Result.

North West Regional College 10pts, Letterkenny IT 0pts.

North West Regional College recorded their second victory of the season when they narrowly defeated Letterkenny Institute of Technology on Wednesday last in their Irish Colleges All Ireland League Division 2 Fixture at City of Derry Rugby Club. The weather conditions were atrocious with torrential rain and a strong wind which never eased for the entire game. The players from both sides have to be commended for serving up such a competitive fixture under conditions that were not conducive to running rugby.
The Derry students played with the conditions in their favour in the first half and expectations were for a sizeable lead by half time. The Letterkenny forwards had other ideas and dominated the scrums and line-outs which limited the supply of ball to the highly rated Derry backline. The Letterkenny captain Dave Herrity was outstanding all through and led by example and was ably supported by prop Jarleth Flanagan who carried ball time and again to relieve Derry pressure.
North West College were struggling all through for quality possession but in David Smith at out half they had a quality kicker who kept Letterkenny pinned inside their own 22metre line. The first score came on 20 minutes with Letterkenny trying to run the ball out of defence Derry centre Stuart Simpson produced turn over ball with a crunching tackle on his opposite number and quickly gained possession to release David Smith to score an unconverted try in the corner. North West College were unable to increase their advantage and turned around just five points in front at the break.
It was Letterkenny Institute’s turn to avail of the weather conditions in the second half and were quickly on the front foot with Scrum Half Connor Patton and out half Michael Turvey working in tandem to keep their team going forward. North West College had to work hard in the forwards to repel the Donegal challenge and captain Cathal Creggan and No 8 Connor Smyth were in the thick of everything but they had to play second fiddle to wing forward and Man of the Match Kevin McLaughlin who was strong in the tackle and aggressive at the breakdown throughout the game.
North West Regional College sealed their victory on sixty five minutes when McLaughlin pounced on loose ball in midfield and made ground before offloading to full back Ruairi Mailey who was having a solid game he in turn found scrum half Packie Kennedy who ran in for an unconverted try to put his team ten points up. Letterkenny tried hard to the end but could never find what was required to breach the North West College defence.
North West Regional College have had two victories from two games in their All Ireland League campaign and find themselves top of their league. The next league for the Derry students is at home to Stranmillis College on Wednesday week.

Date/Time: Wednesday 21st October 2009
Result: Belfast Metropolitan College Nil,
North West Regional College 44pts

North West Regional College recorded a handsome victory away to Belfast Metropolitan College on Wednesday last in their Irish Colleges All Ireland League Division 2 Fixture at Cherryvale. The North West boys dominated throughout in their eight try’s victory and led by 27prs to Nil at half time. This was a rude awakening for Belfast Met in this their inaugural fixture at this level.

North West College were quickly into their stride and on five minutes a No 8 pickup at scrum time and a quick feed on the blind side to scrum half Packie Kennedy saw the Letterkenny man sprint in from 30 metres for a try in the corner. It took another ten minutes for the move of the match when Kennedy imitated a move 40 metres out and fed out half David Smith who moved the ball quickly along the backline to create the overlap for winger Ruairi Mailey to score form 20 metres.

The North West next two try’s were scored by the other winger John McClintock the first on twenty five minutes when he collected a loose clearance and scored from 30 metres, the next came five minutes later when turnover ball from the forwards allowed McClintock to show his pace to outstrip the Belfast defence. The final try of the first half came from the kick-off when Man of the Match Packie Kennedy collected the ball over forty metres out and beat four players to score wide out to give his team a twenty seven point lead at the break.

The second half was an easy canter for North West College and on five minutes Glenn McAfee scored from a forward drive. There was a long wait for the next try and it came on sixty minutes from Limavady student Connor Smyth and was followed five minutes later by another try from David Graham which was converted by Smith.

This was an excellent start for North West Regional College and they can look forward to a successful league campaign. The next league fixture is in two weeks time when they play hosts to Letterkenny Institute of Technology.
