Course Overview

This qualification is designed to provide learners with underpinning knowledge and skills needed when working with children. and includes units from the L3 Diploma, including a diverse range of job roles/occupational areas working in early years children’s settings. The qualification provides extended knowledge and skills to further understanding and provide a steppingstone into higher education as the course offers UCAS points.We are looking for students who are kind, caring and understand the responsibility of working in this hugely rewarding specialist position, can commit to working hard and completing independent study. We have a highly respected and vocationally qualified teaching team of Primary School Teachers, Early Years/ Play Specialists and Nurses/Midwives. Successful completion of this specialist course provides ‘Qualified Practitioner Status’ ( working with 0-6 years). Skills that you need to develop: excellent communication;ability to work with children and staff;creativity and imagination for activities;planning and organisation;independent research and ICT skills;with access to fully equipped specialist practical resource rooms and ‘Real Care Babies’.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Level 2 Diploma for Childrens Care, Learning & Development (CCLD) or Level 2 Diploma in Playwork and GCSE English at Grade C or equivalent OR 4 GCSEs (Grade C or above) including English.Students who do not have a GCSE Grade C or equivalent in Maths will be expected to to gain Essential Skills Level 2 Application of Number in addition to their course (cost covered by NWRC).Attendance at information session also required.

ROI Requirements

Level 2 Diploma for Childrens Care, Learning & Development (CCLD) or Level 2 Diploma in Playwork and OLC English at Grade O5 or equivalent OR 4 OLCs (Grade 05 or above) including English; OR Leaving Cert Applied – Merit or Higher. Students who do not have a Grade 05 or equivalent in Maths will be expected to to gain Essential Skills Level 2 Application of Number in addition to their course (cost covered by NWRC). Attendance at information session also required.

Work Placement

You will be required to undertake work placement in a range of childcare settings for 2 - 3 days per week over the 2 years of the course. As placement is an integral part of your qualification, a self-declaration of current health status is implicit as part of the overall risk assessment process.

Further Study

You may progress into employment or decide to continue to study with us on the *HN in Early Childhood Education and Care *Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies or *Progress to university.

Career Prospects

This qualification includes the units from the Level 3 Diploma for Children’s Care, Learning and Development . Successful achievement of the diploma units will confirm competence in these areas and serve as the required qualification for all new practitioners for registration and regulatory requirements in Northern Ireland. The course will prepare you for employment in the field of Early Years, Childcare, Daycare, Primary, Pre-School, Nursery, Crèche or Special Needs Classroom Assistant, or for progression to University to study Primary School Teaching, Social Sciences, Social Work, Youth Work or Psychology (Note that students must meet the specific entry requirements for each university they apply to). Many of our past students have very successful careers in all of the above fields.
