Course Overview

This is an exciting new course for NWRC Sport. The health and fitness industry is continuing to grow, with over 7,000 gyms in the UK and more than 10 million members, meaning that there are many employment opportunities for people with industry-recognised qualifications. This programme has embedded industry accreditation which allows learners to progress directly to work in the sector or to further study. This includes progression to our Foundation Degree in Sport (validated by Ulster University) and degree programmes offered by many universities. The course offers a unique combination of academic learning and work experience with industry-ready qualification. Through the blend of a BTEC Diploma and industry specific qualifications, students will benefit from a modern, up-to-date curriculum delivery. The mandatory content allows learners to develop technical skills in working with groups and individual clients in a health and fitness environment. Many lecturers on the team are active practitioners with a wealth of professional industry experience. The qualification is intended for post-16 learners who are looking to progress to employment or higher education.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

4 GCSEs (grade C or above) to include English or Maths; OR Level 2 Diploma plus GCSE/Essential Skills English or Maths

ROI Requirements

4 OLC (Grade 05 or above) to include English or maths OR Leaving Certificate Applied – Merit.

Work Placement

The nature of this course will require students to engage with employers within the industry at regular intervals. In year 2 of the programme students have the opportunity to complete an Erasmus project to a European country. In 2019 sports students travelled to Malta for a two-week work placements in Sports Coaching, Fitness Instructing, and Teaching

What's Next?

Further Study

This course can provide progression into higher education. Depending on the grade profile achieved, this progression can include to our Foundation Degree in Sport (validated by Ulster University) and degrees such as PE Teaching, Sports Coaching, Fitness Instruction and Sports Development at universities including Ulster University, Liverpool Hope, Liverpool John Moore’s and University of Central Lancashire.

Career Prospects

This course is ideal for students keen to move directly into employment within the fitness industry. The course content provides learners with up-to-date knowledge, understanding and practical skills to pursue a career in the fitness industry. UCAS points will also be achieved through completion of the BTEC Diploma in Sport; therefore, progression to higher education i.e. foundation degrees and university degrees remains a valid option for many students.
