Course Overview

The course is for learners who are employed within a pharmacy setting and want to develop their role working within the regulatory standards for pharmacy, as set by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) Pharmacy Order 2010. Pharmacy technicians work in a wide range of settings, including (but not exclusively): registered pharmacies, community services, justice (the Prison Service), GP practices, dispensing doctors’ practices, care homes and clinical commissioning groups, hospitals, mental health and in thepharmaceutical industry. The course ensures you are competent to manage the supply of medicines and devices in a pharmacy and assist pharmacists with advisory services. On completion you will be able to support safe and effective pharmacy services, ensure the patient can achieve the best outcomes through their medications, provide information to patients and other healthcare professionals and ensure better referral of appropriate queries to the pharmacist.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Applicants must currently be working in a pharmacy environment for not less than 14 hours per week, having secured a placement as a pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician. They must have 4 GCSEs at Grades A*-C (or 9-4), including English Language, Mathematics and a Science, an acceptable reference for good character and an acceptable self-declaration for health.

ROI Requirements

Applicants must currently be working in a Pharmacy environment within N.Ireland and must register with the Pharmaceutical Society for N. Ireland. They must have 4 OLCs (Grade 05 or above) including a Science subject, plus English and Maths; an acceptable reference for good character and an acceptable self-declaration for health.

Work Placement

Applicants must currently be working in a pharmacy environment for not less than 14 hours per week, having secured a placement as a pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician.

What's Next?

Further Study

The course is delivered by a team of highly skilled and experienced Pharmacists who have played a central role in the design and the delivery of the programme. You will learn on the job in the work environment, as well as in College. The knowledge and skills competencies required for a Trainee Pharmacy Technician are embedded into this qualification, which is recognised by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Career Prospects

On completion of the qualification, graduates may register with the GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician. This allows students to progress directly into employment within the Pharmacy Sector. Alternatively, graduates may progress onto other higher-level qualifications within the College including the HNC in Applied Science.
