What is this course about?

How does 3 A-Levels in Art & Design sound?

Ever thought how good it would be to spend all your time on the subject you love the most rather than dividing up your time with a range of different ones? If you are someone who would love a job in the creative industries and are passionate about your art and design studies above all else, then this course could be just perfect for you!

Spending all your time on art and design related activities allows you to really focus in on the area you want to learn and having more time to study the subject means you go more in-depth, building on the skills you do have whilst learning and gaining new ones. This course is an exciting alternative to ‘A’ level study that gives students a much broader art and design education due to the wide range of specialist areas on offer, some that students may never have tried before.

In Limavady we have a strong reputation for excellence and a proven track record for over twenty five years providing Level 3 (‘A’ level equivalent) Art and Design study. This course which runs over two years full-time, will develop your art and design practice more than a traditional ‘A’ Level, providing you with an exciting, challenging and diverse art and design experience led by a team of specialist lecturers working in dedicated studios and workshops in the Limavady Main Street campus.

Work is theme and project-led and assessed through coursework which allows you to monitor your progress. Completion of this course provides you with a significant portfolio of work for application to progress your studies on a one year Foundation Art and Design course should you need more time to make up your mind which area to choose, or a HND or Degree programme if you’ve decided on your future pathway. It also gives you an insight into the career options available within this ever growing industry.

What will you study?

We offer a range of creative pathways and over the two years students will study:

  • Fine Art
  • Ceramics
  • Graphic Design
  • 3D Design
  • Textiles
  • Fashion
  • Printmaking
  • Illustration

  • History of Art

We develop students practical skills in drawing, designing and making using a range of different materials, techniques and processes and we embed software training in industry standard art and design packages including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and even 3D computer modelling and 3D printing as part of our studies too.

We organise range of educational trips throughout the academic year to museums, galleries, exhibitions and craft events in order to expose our students to a range of creative influences.

Our students also learn through our links with leading professionals and even past students now employed or self-employed, who visit the college to showcase their work and to talk about their practice. In Limavady too, we are proud of our links with the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre and by working in partnership with them, we have been able to offer our students the unique opportunity to publicly exhibit and sell their work in the Keady and Broighter Galleries, normally reserved for touring exhibitions in the Centre’s annual events calendar.

And of course, we end each year of study with our in-house Creative Show exhibition where our students’ work is displayed publicly to hundreds of visitors.
