Entry Requirements
UK Requirements
Students must be 18 years of age or over. As places are limited early application is required.All applicants must meet the general entrance requirements and the standard offer for this course is 48UCAS points as a minimum. The requirements may be met in the following ways: 1. Provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE English Language grades A-C/ 4-9 or equivalent. Essential Skills L2 Communication is acceptable) and Maths (grades A-C/4-9 or equivalent. Essential Skills L2 Use of Number is acceptable). * GCSE English Language (grades A-C/4-9 or acceptable equivalent) and maths (grades A-C/4-9 or acceptable equivalent) may be used as part of the GCSE requirement.1. Provide evidence of passes in five subjects, two of which must be at A level (grades A-E) and three at GCSE level* (grades A-C/4-9); or 2. Provide evidence of passes in four subjects, three of which must be at A level (grades A-E) and one at GCSE level* (grades A- C/4-9); or 3. Provide evidence of an approved qualification at an equivalent level such as a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma or Access to Higher Education qualification or equivalent**; or 4. Provide evidence, for a process of formal accreditation of learning you have gained through work or other experience (APEL). ** Examples of L3 qualifications include A’Levels, for information on common alternative Level 3 qualifications, please refer to the Ulster University Entrance Requirements and Equivalence of Qualifications table available at https://www.ulster.ac.uk/study/entrance-requirements Whilst applicants who do not possess the above qualifications may gain entry to the course through the Accreditation of Prior Learning route (APEL), please note that certificated evidence of English and Maths subjects are required and APEL for these subjects is only considered in exceptional cases. Students completing the three years can progress to the final 18 months of a BSc (Hons) Degree in Counselling.Career Prospects
Those graduating can gain employment in the NHS, private practice or Counselling agencies.Additional Information
This award of the Foundation Degree is achieved after three years part time study (240 credits), which includes 100 hours of supervised professional practice.
Students will have to obtain their own placement in year 2.
For those not intending to gain a practice qualification, an optional academic route is available leading to a Certificate of Higher Education in Counselling Studies, which is completed in the second year of the programme.
We believe it is important to emphasise to prospective applicants that this course requires a substantial commitment of time and effort and can prove demanding in a number of respects; intellectually, physically, emotionally, personally and financially.
The following illustration outlines course requirements and costs in addition to tuition and registration fees over the 3 years:
100 hours of supervised professional practice;
30 hours of personal therapy @ approximately £40 per hour (£1200);
Clinical supervision; approximately 20 sessions of 1 hour, costing approximately £40 per session (£800);
Professional Association membership ~ approximately £65 per year (£195) (NCS, BACP, IACP, ACC, UKCP…,);
Personal Insurance ~ approximately £50 per year (£100)
