Course Overview

The aim of this qualification is for learners to gain the practical competence and knowledge that is relevant to the role of a Registered Veterinary Nurse. This qualification will provide learners with the practical competence and underpinning knowledge required to join the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses. It has been designed to develop Veterinary Nurses who have a holistic approach to their work, a passion for making a difference to the lives of animals, and a solid understanding of their professional responsibilities. A requirement of the professional regulator (RCVS) is that Student Veterinary Nurses must undertake substantial work-based training in approved training practices. This qualification will support the training and education of Veterinary Nurses for entry onto the RCVS register. How is the qualification assessed? Portfolio of evidence - Throughout the two years, you will compile a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the practical applications of learning in the workplace. Assignments - You will complete three assignments/case studies to demonstrate knowledge and understanding; two in year one and one in year two. Multiple choice online examinations - There are seven online examinations throughout the qualification that assess underpinning knowledge. Year 1 Practical Skills Assessment Year 2 VetSkill Licence to Practise Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Once all other assessments have been passed, learners will undertake the VetSkill Licence to Practise OSCE consisting of 12 stations, each lasting 8 minutes, including 2 minutes reading and preparation time.

UK: Applicants must currently be employed within a RCVS approved Veterinary Surgery and hold 5 GCSE’s or Standard grade passes at Grade C or above in: English Language, Mathematics, a Science Subject plus two further subjects (or equivalent qualifications at Level 2 or Higher).ROI: Applicants must currently be employed within a RCVS approved Veterinary Surgery and hold 5OLC’s or Standard grade passes at Grade O5 or above in: English, Mathematics, a Science Subject plus two further subjects (or equivalent qualifications).

This course is part time and delivered across 2.5 years. There will be additional fees and costs associated with year 2.5 Please contact the course co-ordinator for full details. Core Modules: Year 1 VN01 - Professional Veterinary Nursing Responsibilities VN02 - Diagnostic Principles VN03 - Principles of Veterinary Nursing Care 1 VN04 - Pharmacology and Dispensary Management VN05 - Practical Veterinary Nursing Skills and Professional Behaviours Year 2 VN06 - Anaesthesia and Theatre Nursing Skills VN07 - Life Stage Medical Nursing Care and Support VN08 - Principles of Veterinary Nursing Care 2 VN09 - Surgical Nursing and Patient Care Learners must be currently employed by a RCVS Approved Training Practice. Students are required to undertake 1800 hours in the RCVS approved training practice.
