Course Overview

The Diploma is accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists which sets the standard for journalism training in the UK. It is a requirement for entry to most areas of the profession and offers a foundation for a career in print, online, radio and television. Graduates are to be found working at the highest level in the BBC, Irish Times, Belfast Telegraph, Irish News and Newsletter as well as Highland Radio and a range of weekly newspapers. Others have gone on to careers in PR, Marketing, magazines and teaching. Most entrants will have completed, or partially completed, study at Higher Level including degrees or HNC/Ds in a range of disciplines. Applications from mature students are welcome. The course is taught by industry professionals in facilities which mirror the highest professional standards including a TV studio, two radio studios and Outside Broadcast facilities for radio and TV. Students are taught everything from interview skills to video editing, radio production, court reporting, law, social media practice and writing skills.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

32 UCAS points + GCSE (Grade C or above) in English Applicants are also required to attend an interview where they will discuss their interest in news and current affairs and demonstrate the qualities needed to enter this challenging profession.

Work Placement

Students undertake work placement over an extended period and contribute to the college online publication i-news.uk and college station 3CRadio as well as reporting on a range of college and external events using the latest Outside Broadcast equipment for Radio and TV.

What's Next?

Further Study

This is a mainly post graduate programme. However students with a HND in Journalism who then complete the NCTJ qualification can apply to be accepted to the final year of journalism courses at a number of UK universities.

Career Prospects

Graduates are to be found working at the highest level in local and national media outlets including print, online, radio, TV and the associated industries of PR and Marketing. Employment rates for graduates are high and the industry is keen to use the skills which this course provides.
