Course Overview

This Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery (Site Carpentry) is designed to prepare learners for skilled employment and career progression within the construction industry in Northern Ireland. The qualification is aimed at individuals working in a site-based carpentry and joinery role on domestic and commercial construction projects.The course enables learners to develop the advanced knowledge, skills, and competencies required to operate effectively as a competent site carpenter. It builds on prior learning and workplace experience, supporting progression within the carpentry and joinery working environment and providing access to higher levels of responsibility and specialist roles within the industry.Delivery is work-based, meaning learners must be employed within a relevant carpentry and joinery role to successfully undertake the qualification. Assessment is carried out in college and in the workplace, allowing candidates to demonstrate competence through practical and theory based assessments and real, on-site activities.Throughout the programme, learners will develop a strong understanding of industry processes, procedures, and best practice, alongside practical skills.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Apprenticeship - GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above/equivalent Ess.skills also ICT at Level 2 or above/equivalent and you must have appropriate employment with a N.Ireland registered company confirmed by 31/07/2026. It is expected that students have previously achieved a Level 2 qualification prior to course entry. This course will run subject to numbers.

ROI Requirements

Leaving Certificate English and Maths at Grade O4 or above and you must have appropriate employment with a N.Ireland registered company confirmed by 31/07/2026. It is expected that students have previously achieved a Level 2 qualification prior to course entry. This course will run subject to numbers.

Work Placement

Students will be required to attend college 1 day per week and the remainder at work.

Further Study

Achievement of this qualification supports progression into skilled employment within the Carpentry and Joinery sector. On successful completion, learners may also progress to further study at NWRC including relevant Level 4 and Level 5 programmes in construction or the built environment, subject to entry requirements.

Career Prospects

On completion of this qualification, learners can progress into skilled site carpentry and joinery roles across Northern Ireland. Typical salaries range from £16,000–£20,000 for newly qualified carpenters, rising to £22,000–£30,000 with experience and £30,000–£35,000+ at senior level. Opportunities also exist for progression into supervisory, management, self-employment, or specialist roles.
