North West Regional College (NWRC) has received the College of Sanctuary accreditation in recognition of its ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming environment for people seeking sanctuary.

The accreditation is awarded to colleges that have undergone improvements in practices to support refugees and people seeking asylum and help raise awareness among students, staff and the wider community. It also recognises places of education that show outstanding commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and understanding among its diverse student community.

Gillian Moss, NWRC’s Head of Client Services said: “Working in the Further and Higher Education sector we see every day how education and training are powerful tools for change. NWRC has a rich history in supporting learners from a range of backgrounds and experiences and this award is recognition that we are a college for everyone. I am delighted for the college to have received this recognition and thank the many members of staff, particularly those who work in equality, who strive to make the college an inclusive learning environment.”

For the past two years NWRC has offered an Asylum Seeker Scholarship programme, and has increased the ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages) provision to meet demand.

Information sessions and one-to-one or group appointments are held regularly in campuses for new residents to the region so they can discuss course options and look at progression routes.

The college works in partnership with the North West Migrant Forum, Community Education, and other relevant statutory stakeholders and charities to be able to support students resettling in the region.

Staff and students have also undertaken various training programmes and attended workshop including 'Inter-cultural dialogue' to increase knowledge and have a better understanding of the support requirements for sanctuary seekers.

The City of Sanctuary assessment panel congratulated the college for all its hard work and said they were impressed with the work, practice and provision at NWRC.

They added: "We really got a sense of the breadth of people involved in the work around sanctuary and the dedication and passion that there is throughout the college teams."
