Congratulations to our Access Graduate April Canning who has been awarded the Ulster University Allstate Convocation student of the year award.

This award is made to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated significant personal achievement or a substantial contribution to University life.

The mum of four studied the Access Diploma (Adult Learning) in Combined Studies at NWRC and progressed to Ulster University to study Nursing. She said she received great help from her lecturers at NWRC, as well as the Careers Department at NWRC.

April left school at 16 after completing her GCSEs – and decided to return to education when she was 33. She says without NWRC she would not have had the opportunity to pursue a career in health.

She excelled academically and clinically during her time at University and hopes to pursue a career as an Oncology Nurse.

April was also awarded the Serendipity Scholarship by Ulster University in 2022 awarded to a student undertaking a professional degree in an area related to transforming the lives of others. She was also shortlisted for the Royal College of Nursing Student of the Year Award.

Aprils also volunteers for the ‘Look Good Feel Better’ programme associated with Macmillan cancer support, Headway, the Brain Injury Association, and the Ulster American Folk Park.
