Foundation Degree in Science

Meet our award-winning Science graduate Carole Dowds.

Carole now works as a Science Technician at NWRC after completing the FOUNDATION DEGREE in APPLIED and MEDICAL SCIENCE.

Previously a graduate of Business Studies, Carole decided to change careers and applied for the Higher Education Foundation Degree in Science at Strand Road Campus.

During her studies she participated in Project Based Learning and developed an award-winning prototype of a painkiller patch for transdermal administration of drugs to children.

The mum of two is now working at NWRC while completing the BSc (Hons) Natural Sciences Chemistry with the Open University and hopes to continue with further study when she finishes her Science Degree.

Carole said: “The FD Degree in Applied and Medical Science was an excellent course to study. It was hard work but very rewarding, but I had fantastic support from the lecturers, who I now work with in the Science Department. I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to study locally for a career in Science.’

This course can be studied on a full and part time basis at NWRC.

Students from the course can progress to year 2 of a range of related degree programmes at Ulster University or elsewhere, or can enter at Year 1 of a wide range of degree courses.

After completing the FD you may also explore employment opportunities which could include: • Pharmacy Technician • Dietetic Assistant • Cardiology Technician • Audiology Technician • Basic Level Pharmacology Staff • School Technician • Assistant Grade Professional
