Three students from North West Regional College (NWRC) are set to compete against some of the top competitors in the UK in a series of skills competitions this November.
Limavady campus student Alissa Jarvis is the only student from Northern Ireland to qualify for the Beauty Therapy Practitioner competition in the WorldsSkills National Finals which take place in Wales from November 18-19.
And Springtown campus Tiling apprentice Jay Armstrong, and Greystone campus apprentice Jack Rogers, will be competing at the Skillbuild National Finals on the same dates at Arena MK in Milton Keynes.
David McCay – NWRC lecturer and Worldskills Champion congratulated the students on their success.
He said: “SkillBuild, delivered by CITB, is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices. Out of more than 1,000 competitors Tilers Jack and Jay have made it to the finals, showcasing their exceptional technical skill. NWRC has enjoyed great success in the Skillbuild competition over the past ten years particularly in the area of Wall and Floor Tiling and we wish the two the best as they take part in this high quality and competitive category.”
Jack and Jay will compete over two days when they travel to Milton Keynes where they will face a previously unseen set task in their trade.
Alissa Jarvis’s competition will take place at Cardiff and Vale College where she will be asked to demonstrate expertise in general beauty services as well as being a specialist in two or three areas such as advanced body and facial treatments, makeup and skincare advice.
Tracey Cameron Rainey - Lecturer in Beauty Therapy at NWRC Limavady said: “The team are absolutely delighted to see Alissa progress to the finals of the competition. In Wales Alissa will be carrying out a range of services which reflect both current and traditional standards plus current industry requirements. This may include advanced body, nail, make up and facial treatments.
“She will also be tested on health and safety, professionalism, client care and communication. These are all skills that are delivered across all the Beauty Therapy courses at NWRC demonstrating the high value we place on quality of care and professionalism.”
