Student Case Study

Babering student Lucy Williams poses for a charity photoshoot around Derry city

Lucia Williams (Lucy)

Course: City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Barbering

Meet Lucy, who studied Barbering, among many other subjects at the College. She says what she loved most about her experience was the buzz from taking part in competitions, catwalk shows and photoshoots.

Chase your dreams! Never be defined by the limits other people set for you. The only person who can limit your ability to be the best person you can be, is yourself.

Previous Education before you came to NWRC?

Before hitting the Tech I studied at St Brigid’s College.

Why did you choose to study with NWRC?

I felt the College had a lot to offer me. I've studied many things over the years from Engineering to Hairdressing; Woodwork to Make-Up and Barbering (I love to keep the options open, lol).

Tell us a bit more about your course

I completed different courses over the years and have learned so much, not just from the lecturers and staff at the NWRC, but also from the students I've met throughout.

I've so many great memories of my time here, including the MUA Photography shoot organised by my tutor, Susan Cassidy. I took part in the catwalk and the buzz that day was amazing! Susan had us all up-to-date with makeup trends from the 1920s to 2020s. It was like stepping into the twilight zone when the class was given the task of recreating the different years for the show.

The buzz continued when I progressed to the Level 2 and 3 in Barbering with Grainne McCollum. I got involved in the NWRC City Hotel Cross Campus Hair & Beauty event with students from Derry, Strabane and Limavady. Grainne taught me some great cutting skills and tips that I continue to use daily.

Were there any particular highlights during your course?

The highlights for me was learning a trade that would stay with me and is something I can teach my daughters, nephews and nieces as they grow.

But it was the people who I met along the way and the things I've learned from them honestly that made my experience so great. I became good friends not only with the students in my classes, but also the lecturers I've met over the years and we still stay in touch.

I have so many great memories of my time at NWRC, but one of my favourite days by far was when we did the photoshoot for the NWRC Charity Barbering calendar. I got a call a few days before the shoot (with the talented photographer, Neil Mellon) was asked would I participate and of course I said "Yes" - it was for a great cause!

The MUA students and the Barbering students worked together to help get us prepared for the shoot. Once we were all ready, we headed off around Derry to get the pictures in lots of different urban locations. The time and effort by all involved really showed the day the printed calendars arrived.

Would you recommend this course to other students?

I would highly recommend any of the courses at the College. The staff go out of their way to help every student that walks through their doors and Learning Link team are available for students who need or would like extra help and support.
