Course Overview

This course is designed to build knowledge, understanding, practical skills and professional values in children’s care, learning and development. It provides the essential qualification needed to work in a supervised role within the early years / childcare sector, such as a pre-school, nursery, day-care, or as a a playgroup or classroom assistant. Students will also participate in transversal skills development and project based learning activities.You will learn in an Early Years specialist resource room equipped with a wide range of play materials, allowing you to plan practical activities, explore sensory resources, and gain experience caring for ‘Real Care Babies’. You will also take part in outdoor trips and competitions. In previous years, students have worked alongside international learners and taken part in forest school activities. Throughout the course, you will develop key workplace skills, including: Excellent communication skills• The ability to work with children in a sensitive and positive manner• Creativity and imagination when designing displays• Strong planning and organisational skills.Assessment will take place through practical tasks, written assignments, and work placement observations.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

4 GCSEs Grades A-G to include Maths and English Grade D as a minimum Students who do not hold Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy will be required to complete these during this course.

ROI Requirements

4 OLCs Grades O1- O8 to include Maths and English Grade O5 as a minimum. Students who do not hold Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy will be required to complete these during this course.

Work Placement

Work placement is a mandatory component of this course. Enrolment on this course is subject to checks, including a satisfactory Access NI check. As placement is an integral part of your qualification, a self-declaration of current health status is implicit as part of the overall risk assessment process.

Upon completion you may progress onto the Level 3 Diploma for Children’s Care, Learning and Development.

Career Prospects

Some Trainees move into employment in the Early Years sector, however many of our Level 2 Trainees choose to progress to a higher level course with us before progressing to become Childcare Managers, Teachers and Social Workers. Students hoping to advance their careers at university must achieve the university admissions criteria.
