Course Overview

This qualification is designed to help learners build the knowledge and understanding needed when working with children and young people from birth to 12 years of age. This qualification confers occupational competence for childcare, learning and development in Northern Ireland. It will prepare you for employment in the field of Early Years and Childcare, as a qualified Early Years/ Foundation Stage classroom assistant and Daycare, Pre-school, Nursery, Crèche or Special Needs Assistant or Childminder. Enrolment is subject to checks, including a satisfactory Access NI check. You will attend an Early Years placement each week to complete 600 hours and will be assessed working alongside children in the 0 - 6 years age range. A portfolio of evidence will be created over the duration of the course to meet the 70 credits required. Units include Context and principles for the early years sector, communication and partnership working, safeguarding, supporting childrens development, personal care and nutrition, play opportunities and experiences, keeping children safe, healthy and well and supporting children with learning disabilities and health needs.

UK Requirements

GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths is Desirable but not Essential. Attendance at information session essential. An Access NI check must be completed before commencing placement.
