Course Overview

This degree, delivered by NWRC and validated by Queen’s University Belfast, in collaboration with Stranmillis University College, is specifically aimed at students who have completed the QUB Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies and who are employed in the early years sector.
Commencing in January 2026, the course will run for five semesters across three academic years. The programme has been carefully developed to meet the training needs of current and future practitioners within Northern Ireland and beyond. Its aim is to promote a multi-professional approach to early childhood education and care, encouraging collaboration between professionals to improve outcomes for children and their families.
The degree equips learners with a deep knowledge of holistic development and education for children from birth to eight years, blending theory with practical application. Students will gain a broad and applied understanding of how young children think, learn, and develop, preparing them to undertake diverse roles in early childhood education and care, and related sectors.
Core themes include: 1) Understanding the Child, 2) The Child in the Learning Context, and 3) The Child in the Family and Community.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

The overriding consideration in admitting applicants, is evidence that the learner is likely to be able to complete the course satisfactorily. Attendance at Individual or Group Pre-Entry Advice Sessions (IPEAS and GPEAS) may be required. The application process will include attendance at in-person, group interviews, playing an important role in the selection of all students. For those candidates already possessing a Foundation Degree, their level of achievement in that qualification may exempt them from the interview process through articulation arrangements. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age on or before 1st July in the year of proposed entry to the course. Applicants must possess a GCSE (Grade ‘C’ or above) qualification in English and Maths (Level 2 Essential Skills in Communication is acceptable in lieu of a Grade ‘C’ in GCSE English Language; however, Level 2 Application of Number cannot be substituted for GCSE Mathematics). They may have attained a Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies from Queen’s University Belfast in collaboration with Stranmillis University College. Alternatively, applicants may have completed other Level 5 qualifications in the field of early childhood education and care; for example, HND, HLA or CCLD qualifications. Applicants who do not meet the criteria outlined above but have evidence of relevant qualifications, substantial knowledge or relevant industrial experience should contact Registry at Stranmillis University College. Vetting Process: This course involves working with children, young people and vulnerable adults. To assess suitability for such work Stranmillis University College require an Access NI check to be carried out at the start of the course of study and further on a regular basis.

The Degree in Early Childhood Studies provides a solid foundation for individuals who are interested in pursuing education at postgraduate level to further specialise in their field, thereby expanding their career opportunities; for example, a Master’s in ECS, or a PGCE qualification.

Upon successful completion of the Degree in Early Childhood Studies, graduates will be well prepared for a variety of roles in the field of early childhood education and care.
