Course Overview

Carpentry & Joinery enables you to work internally or externally on a range of projects, making furniture, stairs, and roofing systems - the variety for a skilled professional is always challenging. Finishing to a high standard and job satisfaction are integral to success. CNC engraving and milling is an additional woodcraft which you may gain experience with at NWRC. Enrichment activities include personal development workshops on mental health, road safety, and cultural diversity amongst others. Our students also have the opportunity to compete in Regional and UK Competitions with the aim of competing in World Skills. Within the Traineeship course, you will also take part in real-life working projects based on the Project-Based learning Model.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Traineeship - 4 GCSEs Grades A-G to include Maths at Grade D and English Grade E as a minimum. Apprenticeship -GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above/equivalent . You must also have employment with a N.Ireland registered company confirmed by 31/07/2026. Applicants without ICT @ Level 2 must commit to additional class for this to be achieved in first year of programme. PT evening ICT classes at NWRC available prior to September 2026

Work Placement

Traineeship Students will be required to attend work experience which will be organised on a weekly basis or in blocks throughout the calendar year. Apprenticeship You are employed so you attend NWRC 1 day per week to complete the Level 2 qualification and you will also be assessed on site by NWRC Assessor.

What's Next?

Further Study

On successful completion of the Level 2 qualification it is possible to progress onto full time employment on Apprenticeship NI programme with further options for progression including a Higher National Certificate, Higher National Diploma, NEBOSH, or a degree.

Career Prospects

• Newly trained Joiners can earn in the range of £14,000 - £17,000• Trained with experienced Joiners can earn in the range of £20,000 - £35,000• Senior/master craft bench/site joiners can earn in the range of £30,000 - £50,000 salaries depend on location, employer, level of responsibility, and the amount of overtime worked. Self-employed bench joiners set their own pay rates.Carpenters and Joiners with the right skills and qualifications can become College Lecturers.
