Course Overview

Higher National Certificate in General Engineering (with a focus on Mechanical, Manufacture and Design). The course allows for a wide range of practical activities and opportunities for team working, incorporating a range of computer based IT Engineering Applications where students have access to industry-standard Design, Manufacture and Control software packages. In year 1, students undertake study of a module in Engineering Mathematics, which consolidates and builds upon the apprentices understanding and knowledge of mathematics. Students also study the application of science in engineering through an Engineering Science module. Apprentices also undertake study of CAD using industry standard software such as SOLIDWORKS and the application of CAD/CAM in manufacture. In the 2nd year apprentices undertake study of PLCs and Fluid Mechanics. They also study Engineering Design process and apply knowledge and experience to undertake an Engineering project.This course also has a full time option where all 8 units can be taken in 1 year, however, whether the course runs is numbers dependent.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

32 UCAS points with at least one pass in a related discipline plus C or above in GCSE Mathematics (or equivalent) OR A BTEC level 3 qualification in an Engineering discipline OR Mature students with alternative qualifications will be considered for admission.

ROI Requirements

32 UCAS points with at least one Higher Pass in a related discipline plus OLC (Grade O5 or above) in Mathematics (or equivalent) OR A BTEC level 3 qualification in an Engineering discipline OR Mature students with alternative qualifications will be considered for admission.

Further Study

Successful completion of the Higher National Certificate with appropriate grades may enable progression to a BEng (Hons) degree pathway of related degree at Ulster University or similar degrees at other universities. The course will enable you to seek employment as Higher Engineering Technicians and Incorporated Engineers in the local engineering/ manufacturing industry.
