Course Overview

BTEC Higher Nationals have introduced an exciting new specification for the Health and Social Care sector and carries 120 credits. This refreshed curriculum delves deeper into the working world of health and social care, prioritising the development of learners’ knowledge and practical skills to prepare them for further study or employment in the sector. The new specification includes insightful modules such as Caring for Individuals with Dementia and Addressing Health Inequalities. It is delivered by staff with extensive industry experience, bringing real-world insights and expertise directly into the classroom. Students must attend an information session and complete ACCESS NI checks as part of essential entry criteria. Work will be assessed through coursework and placement experience. A mandatory requirement is that students are deemed fit for placement. Students will require appropriate dress/uniform for work in the health and social care setting and be deemed ‘placement ready’ by the College.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

64 UCAS points or equivalent plus 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above to include English GCSE and Maths GCSE or equivalent (Essential Skills Level 2) OR Extended Diploma – MPP profile plus 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above to include English GCSE and Maths GCSE or equivalent (Essential Skills Level 2); OR Access - 45%. Information Session, Access NI check required

ROI Requirements

64 UCAS points or above plus 5 OLCs to include English & Maths at Grade O5 and above (equivalent to pass in GCSE); OR Extended Diploma – MPP profile plus 5 OLCs at Grade O5 or above to include English OLC and Maths OLC or equivalent (Essential Skills Level 2); OR Access - 45%. Information Session required. Access NI required. Note: Whilst ILC O5/D1 is acceptable for English Leaving Cert (Ordinary Level) for entry to HNC, students must be made aware that they should check the criteria for progression to their universities of choice as university entry requirements vary.

Further Study

This course seeks to facilitate entry to university to study degrees. Popular progression routes include nursing, social work, occupational therapy, psychology, criminology, speech and language therapy and paramedic science.
