Yolande Shannon

Course: Higher National Certificate in Art & Design (Art Practice)

Meet Yolande, a part-time Art & Design student at Limavady campus. She hopes to continue studying to complete her HND and eventually progress to a full degree. She says it's never too late to follow your dreams.

NWRC is one of the best Art colleges around and it was right on my doorstep, so I thought 'why not?' and I've never looked back. I have learned and developed so much in the last two years.

Where are you from?
Limavady.

-----

What was your previous education?

I left school after completing my A-Levels and started working pretty much straight away. None of my GCSEs or A-Levels were Art related. My my love for Art& Design came in my later years.

-----

Why did you choose to study Art & Design at NWRC?

I've always been a creative person, but never studied Art at school. I recently retired and thought now was the perfect time to study and get a qualification. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it.

NWRC is one of the best Art colleges around and it was right on my doorstep, so I thought 'why not?' and I've never looked back. The time has flown by, and I have learned and developed so much in the last two years. I even had the opportunity to design my own glasses and have them custom made at an opticians!

Tell us a bit more about your course

The course was so enjoyable, but at the same time it was hard work. I hadn't studied since leaving school after my A-levels and I was pretty much thrown in at the deep end. The workshops ranged from digital photography, print, painting and drawing to 3D sculpture in wire, glass, and ceramics. The tutors were fantastic and were so encouraging.

-----

What do you plan to do afterwards?

I plan now to return to NWRC in September 2023 and enrol in the Higher National Diploma in Art & Design and who knows, I may even venture further and take my Degree!

-----

Would you recommend this course to other students?

I honestly can't recommend this course enough. No matter what age you are, it's never too late to follow your dream. I did!
