This qualification is designed for learners with a strong interest in practical, hands-on learning. Learners should have a genuine interest in sport, with a proven record of participation, volunteering, and/or coaching.This course is perfect for anyone who loves sport and wants to learn how to coach, lead, and support others. You’ll get hands-on experience planning and delivering coaching sessions, learn how athletes develop, and explore what it’s like to work in the sports industry. It’s a great pathway into coaching, PE, and sport development, or onto further study if you want to take your passion even further.The course combines classroom-based teaching with practical experience, offering opportunities to gain industry-recognised qualifications such as First Aid, Safeguarding, Coaching, and Refereeing awards.Learners will have access to industry technologies, e.g., STATS Sport and VEO. Learners will build confidence, teamwork, and communication skills. If you’re thinking about becoming a coach, PE teacher, community sport development officer, or going into further study, this course gives you a solid stepping stone to take your passion to the next level.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

4 GCSE’s (Grade C or above) OR Level 2 Diploma.Learners should have a genuine interest in sport, with a proven record of participation, volunteering, and/or coaching.

ROI Requirements

4 OLCs ( grade O5 or above) OR Leaving Certificate applied Merit grade OR NI Level 2 Diploma. Learners should have a genuine interest in sport, with a proven record of participation, volunteering, and/or coaching.

Work Placement

While there is no designated formal work placement, learners will have multiple opportunities to engage with local sports teams, clubs and schools. These experiences provide valuable practical exposure, allowing learners to develop their coaching skills, enhance their professional confidence, and gain meaningful insight into the sports industry.

Further Study

Many learners progress to higher education, choosing to pursue degree programmes in sports coaching, physical education teaching, sport and exercise science, sports development, or strength and conditioning.

Career Prospects

The BTEC Level 3 in Sports Coaching and Development offers a clear pathway to employment while also carrying UCAS Tariff points. Recognised by higher education providers, the course supports progression to degree programmes such as BA (Hons) Sports Coaching and Development or BA (Hons) Sports Management. Learners are advised to check specific entry requirements with individual universities.
