This course is delivered through a flexible blended learning approach, allowing students to enrol at any time throughout the academic year and progress at their own pace with full online support.Designed for professional yachtsmen, workboat skippers, and crew — regardless of their role on board — the course focuses on the critical importance of understanding legal responsibilities and upholding the duty of care to passengers, crew, and other water users.The Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) course is a compulsory requirement for all new and renewing RYA Commercial Endorsement holders. It can be completed at any stage prior to your Commercial Endorsement application or renewal. Upon successful completion, the PPR certificate remains valid for either your first endorsement or your next renewal, ensuring you meet the required professional standards to operate commercially.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course but it highly recommended that applicants have some level of knowledge for seamanship. This Royal Yachting Association (RYA) course will be a pre-requisite for anyone applying for or renewing their commercial endorsement through the RYA.

Core topics include: Correct manning requirements and the importance of maintaining up-to-date skills Safe management and operation of commercial vessels Compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment Risk assessment, control measures, and implementation of safe operating procedures Ensuring legal compliance for the vessel and its intended operations Understanding legal environmental obligations The importance of planning and maintaining situational awareness The course also reinforces your role within the professional maritime industry and your legal duty of care to passengers, crew, and other water users. You will gain a clear understanding that, as a professional, you are accountable for ensuring safety and compliance — and may be held responsible should things go wrong.
