Course Overview

Careers in sports science or sports therapy require a strong educational foundation and practical experience.Our Foundation Degree in Sport, in partnership with Ulster University, offers two pathways*: Sports Therapy and Sports Science.The Sports Science pathway is designed with industry standards in mind. Successful students will gain the skills and knowledge essential for success in this field. The Sports Therapy pathway has been developed to address the growing demand for qualified professionals in sports therapy and rehabilitation. This programme prepares students for advanced study and equips them for employment opportunities, including a professional industry qualification in Sports Massage.** Students will benefit from a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.Assessment methods include practical sessions, written assignments, and exams. Additionally, students have opportunities to pursue coaching and sport-related qualifications, which may incur a small fee. These qualifications enhance employability and provide a competitive edge in the job market. More optional modules have been added to the programme, further strengthening our partnership with Ulster University and significantly enhancing potential employment opportunities for students.*Subject to enrolment.**Subject to approval.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the University’s general entry requirements as set out in the prospectus AND 48 UCAS points, plus GCSE at Grade C in English Language and Mathematics, or equivalent. Attendance at an information session is required. Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) may apply for entry (visit www.nwrc.ac.uk/apply for details). The initial offer standard may vary from year to year.

Applicants must satisfy the University’s general entry requirements as set out in the prospectus. AND 48 UCAS Points, plus OLC (Grade O4 or above) in English and Maths. NOTE: GCSE Maths Grade C or above is required for progression to top-up degrees at Ulster University. Attendance at an information session is required. Work Placement

During Year 2 of the programme, students will undertake a minimum of 240 hours of work placement as part of the Work-Based Learning module. This can take place in a variety of sport settings.

Further Study

The Sports Science pathway is structured around a flexible ‘two plus two’ or two plus one model, allowing students to achieve advanced entry into various degree programs at Ulster University. Upon completion, students can apply for Year 2 of the BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science, BSc (Hons) Sport, Physical Activity and Health, or BSc (Hons) Sports Studies. Alternatively, they may qualify for Year 3 of the BSc Sports Coaching programme. You can also progress to Year 3 of the BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise at ATU Donegal or one year top-up degrees in UK universities.

Career Prospects

On completion, students can apply for employment opportunities within a wide range of sports industries including Sports Development, Sports Coaching, Public Sector health and wellbeing. On achievement of relevant industry qualifications, students could gain employment in the area of sports rehabilitation, sports therapy, or sports injuries.
