Course Overview

Designed for adults, the course will provide the opportunity to achieve an equivalence of 3 ‘A’ levels so that you can progress to higher level courses in further education or to university. You will have to commit to a high degree of independent study and reading, studying up to seven subjects. Students should preferably have a GCSE English Grade C or equivalent, and will also be asked to demonstrate a level of literacy and numeracy. Students without GCSE English or equivalent may be expected to undertake an Essential Skills Level 2 Literacy qualification in conjunction with their Access course.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Students will be required to provide evidence of a basic competence in English and Mathematics and be 19 years of age or over on 1 July in year of entry and have been away from full-time education for two years. Information meeting required. For the purpose of admission to HE study, as part of the full award of Access Diploma, a 20 credit L2 Mathematics module, which is passed at 40%, will be recognised by both Ulster University and Queen’s University Belfast as fulfilling requirements for passing GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4. Both the above Universities in Northern Ireland also accept the full Access award as providing evidence of competence in English Language, meeting the general entrance requirement for GCSE English

The part-time Combined Studies Access course, which is an evening course that runs two evenings per week, allows you to select a pathway to take you into Higher Education or employment opportunities. Students must successfully complete Year 1 in order to proceed to Year 2. Year 1 subjects include; Communications, Mathematics, Study and Digital Skills. Year 2 subjects include; Sociology, History, English Literature and Business & Enterprise.
