Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 4 / 5 Higher National Certificate / Diploma)

Pearson BTEC
Early Years

Course Overview

The Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Early Childhood Education and Care provide a professional pathway into the Early Years sector, combining academic knowledge with assessed workplace experience. The Level 4 (Year 1) Higher National Certificate (HNC) offers a comprehensive introduction to child development, play, safeguarding and inclusive practice, alongside 375 hours of supervised placement. The Level 5 (Year 2) Higher National Diploma (HND) builds on this foundation, developing advanced skills in leadership, quality improvement, research and child-centred pedagogy through 525 cumulative hours in practice. These qualifications prepare students for employment as early years practitioners, supervisors or managers, and support progression to university degrees such as BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies or related fields. Emphasis is placed on reflective practice, professional identity and achieving positive outcomes for children. Learners study in well-equipped early years specialist facilities and are supported by experienced tutors and placement assessors. Both levels are nationally recognised, vocationally focused, and designed to develop confident, competent and compassionate Early Years professionals.
