Course Overview

Studying Engineering will provide you with the opportunity to gain well-paid, prestigious employment, equipped with skills recognised around the world. Engineering is recognised as critical for the development of a knowledge economy. BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Engineering (601/7591/6)Equivalent in size to 1.5 A Levels. 7 modules including External assessment. This qualification has been designed as a one-year, full-time course that supports progression to an apprenticeship in engineering or to a further year of study at Level 3. BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Engineering (601/7588/6)Equivalent in size to three A Levels. 15 modules including External assessment. This qualification has been designed as a two-year, full-time course that meets entry requirements in its own right for learners wanting to progress to employment in engineering. Learners gain relevant skills and knowledge from studying a range of content focused on electrical/electronic and mechanical disciplines. Progression could be either directly to employment in Level 3 job roles, higher apprenticeship programmes or other appropriate higher education courses in engineering.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Level 2 Diploma in Engineering OR 4 GCSEs (Grade C or above) to include Maths.

ROI Requirements

Level 2 Diploma in Engineering, OR 4 OLCs (Grade O5 or above) to include Maths OR Leaving Cert Applied – Merit.

Work Placement

In Previous years students were offered work placement during the summer weeks through a Sentinus programme. This was not part of the Level 3 course, but only for student benefit.

What's Next?

Further Study

This course will prepare you for entry into the Engineering industry as engineering technicians, or for entry into Higher Education to undertake Degree level studies. Areas of higher study may include: Mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Electronics and Computing and Agricultural Engineering. These courses are available at various Universities including Ulster University, Queen’s University, Belfast, and at Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Another main route includes foundation degree programmes at the NWRC which allows access to the above courses at university (year 2 entry)

Career Prospects

This qualification has been designed as a two-year, full-time course that meets entry requirements in its own right for learners wanting to progress to employment in engineering. Learners gain relevant skills and knowledge from studying a range of content focused on electrical/electronic and mechanical disciplines, for example electrical machines and maintenance of mechanical systems. Progression could be either directly to employment in Level 3 job roles or via higher apprenticeship programmes.
