Course Overview

Bricklaying is a skill which is in high demand by small and medium sized construction companies and therefore apprenticeship and employment opportunities are good across Northern Ireland. As a bricklayer you will work within the Construction Industry both on commercial and residential projects. You can work internally and externally on residential and commercial projects. If you like to interpret drawings, set out, measure, construct and finish, then this is the career for you. Enrichment activities and personnel development workshops on mental health, road safety and cultural diversity are built into the programme. Our students also have the opportunity to compete in Regional and UK. Participation in competition and winning awards enhances your Curriculum Vitae and may lead to exciting employment opportunities. Students without Maths, English and ICT at Grade C or above must also attend additional essential skills which allows for progression to Level 3.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Traineeship - 4 GCSEs Grades A-G to include Maths at Grade D and English Grade E as a minimum. Students without Maths and English at Grade D or above will have the opportunity to complete these at Level 2. Apprenticeship - GCSE Maths and English at Grade D or above/equivalent. You must also have employment with a N.Ireland registered company confirmed by 31/07/2026. Applicants without ICT @ Level 2 must commit to a additional class for this to be achieved in first year of programme..

ROI Requirements

Traineeship - 4 OLCs Grades O1-O8 to include Maths at Grade O5 and English Grade O6 as a minimum . Students without Maths and English at Grade O5 or above will have the opportunity to complete these at Level 2. Apprenticeship - Leaving Certificate English and Maths at Grade O5 or above. You must also have employment with a NI registered company confirmed by 31/07/2026. Applicants without ICT at Level 2 must commit to additional class for this to be achieved in first year of programme. Attendance at a course information session is advised but not mandatory.

Work Placement

Traineeship Students will initially be provided with in college work placement which will prepare students for industrial placements if gained through the academic year. Apprenticeship You are employed so you attend NWRC one day per week to complete the Level 2 qualification and you will also be assessed on site by NWRC Brickwork Assessor. You may also be required to attend college on days outside of the normal class day should Ess. skills be required.

What's Next?

Further Study

On successful completion of Apprenticeship Level 2 it is possible to complete a Level 3 through the Apprenticeship NI route. There are also options for progression via a Level 3 Diploma in Brickwork, Higher Level Apprenticeship, HND/C, NEBOSH, and degree options.

Career Prospects

Skills that are in demand are brickwork repair, pointing, rendering, restoration, conservation, stone cladding. The average Construction salary for Bricklaying jobs is £36,679.
